James A. Theeck, “Jim” of Brenham, Texas who was a dynamic person that touched the lives of many people passed away at the age of 70 on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at the Med Center in College Station, Texas. Visitation was held Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at Brenham Memorial Chapel in Brenham. Rev. Phil Hassell and Pastor Hollis Hoffman officiated the funeral Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Independence Baptist Church with burial in Independence Cemetery.
Jim was born on October 24, 1940 to Marie Johanna and James Dale Theeck. On January 24, 1964, Jim married Dorothy Hegar at the United Church of Christ in Cypress, Texas and to this union was two sons, Clay and Shannon.
During high school and through his years at Texas A & M University, Jim worked at Nine Bar Ranch. Jim was a 1965 graduate of Texas A & M University with a degree in Animal Husbandry. In 1967 George Butler owner of Mayfair Ranch offered him a job where by he was employed as the General Manager. Jim transformed Mayfair’s Santa Gertrudis herd to an award-winning herd breeding two National Champion bulls, several National Junior Champion Females and numerous Reserve National Champion cattle. He along with Wylie Taliaferro, Roy Henry and Charlie Bradbury formed the 1st National Junior Santa Gertrudis Heifer Show. In 1977 under Jim’s management at Mayfair, the Tri Star Sale was created with 4G Ranch and Superior Land & Cattle. He also served on the SGBI Board, as well as on numerous committees through out the years.
In addition to the Santa Gertrudis, Jim took Mayfair Ranch to the forefront in commercial cattle production developing a 2,000 head commercial herd that produced F1’s and Santa Gertrudis x Hereford cattle. He started one of the nations first F1 commercial replacement female sales, offering over 400 head of F1 and Santa Gertrudis cross cattle. Jim continued to operate and breed his Santa Gertrudis based cattle developing his own “Brazos” composite at his Walking T Ranch and Rafter J Cattle Company until his death. He was also a provider of cattle to many youth within 4-H and FFA. He was known for judging cattle and teaching cattle programs around the world. Jim was also a member of numerous cattle associations.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Dorothy Hegar Theeck; two sons, Clay Theeck and wife Julia of Brenham, and Shannon Theeck of Mertzon; grandchildren, Blane Theeck, Avery Theeck, Cameron Theeck, Cody Williams and wife Tia, Justin Solomon; great-granddaughter, Cassie Williams; brothers, Bubba Theeck, Mickey Theeck; sister, Colleen Brothersen; sister-in-law, Marilyn Taylor; brother-in-law, Bill Hegar; aunt, Elsie Mittelstaedt; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. His parents Marie Johanna and James Dale Theeck preceded him in death.
Serving as pallbearers were Jody Naumann, Joey Muegge, Jerry Moriarty, Murphy Moriarty, Kevin Williams, Cody Williams, Justin Soloman and Dale Steinfield.
